RZA Discusses Making Music Without Profit Motive

RZA discusses moving beyond money and making music strictly for the sake of artistic expression.  Freed from thoughts of financial compensation, he explains the ease of working with John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on personal projects and freely contributing to the BlakRoc album.

We just make music. I’ve made 100 songs this year, and probably nobody won’t hear them but us who made it. It feels good, yo. It feels good to do it with no strings attached. Not having to worry about if somebody is gonna criticize it, if it’s gonna sell. I’m past that.

  1. I agree….doing it for the sheer fun of it is hella less stressful than worrying about marketing and financials….

  2. I definitely agree. If more producers nowadays used that philosophy, music, particularly mainstream hip-hop, would be so much better.

  3. I feel Rza but he has that freedom to make music with out making money cause he is all ready a established producer, artist making scores for movies.

    • Yo Thi!rsty
Same Freedom meaning not working a 9 to 5 and just make beats. He has money not to worry about making money of music.

  4. @shan money
you have the same “freedom” too bro, its all in the mental!

John is 10000% correct, if producers/artist were more organic and not so burdened with paperwork, music would be in a much better space right now, especially with all this technology we have now.
Rap music has become another 2 bit american hustle, thats why everybody sounds like each other! Its basically the ol “dont recreate the wheel” spiel…
“Fans” lost respect for the art of HIP HOP… and we hear it in the RAP MUSIC…then it shows in the album sales …
and it confused the order of things…totally…
thats why you see fashion the way it is…
how stupid gang culture has gotten…
how retarded costal bias has become…
how easy it is to rap and produce now…
    there are no “rules”… anymore…
you dont HAVE TO be original anymore…you can jack niggas drums, sample, idea all that shit…and its ok…
you dont HAVE TO “dig” in the traditional sense…anymore…you dont HAVE TO…not like the old days, not with the power of the internet!
Rappers dont HAVE TO know their history…cause “they be gettin money”….
    MCs know…
DJs know…not serato junkies either…niggas who can do both…
    bombers know…
    B-Boys know…
And when the artist “dont care”…
Fans “dont care”….and stop buying it…
    plain and simple…
