Propellerhead Slowly Reveals Reason 5 and Record 1.5

Two massive updates are on the horizon from Propellerhead Software with the release of Reason 5 and Record 1.5. However, rather than unleash all of the news at once, the company has decided to tease all of us with five incremental feature unveilings, each of which will take place on a different day this week.

What we know so far is that the Dr. REX Loop Player has been renamed Dr. OctoRex and beefed up to load eight REX loops into one player.

  1. hmnnnnn, interesting…I’m curious to see what the other major updates are. I’ve been in love with Maschine the last month though so I rarely use Reason save for the sounds…

  2. I am between Reason and Logic 9 I got get record! Propellerheads step there game they just need to let you add different plugins.

  3. Damnitman, just when I thought I had Reason 4 figured out. Lol The octo rex looks like a beast tho’. I’ll be tuned in this whole week

  4. i dont care about all this gibberish all i need them to do is introduce the ability to use plugins with it and its curtains.

  5. I doubt Propellerhead will ever allow VST Support, they figure that’s what Rewire is for. I’m interested in seeing the new modules in 5, and what tweaks they are going to make to Record. I just started using record this past month and with Reason its a beast you can really get some interesting sideschaining going on with it.

  6. You guys stop holding your breath for vst support. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. They’re only going to introduce plugs/instruments they design and that make sense to their plan.

The overriding factor is they value the integrity of Reason/Record too much to open it up to random plugs. I respect that.

  7. Yep – woowe is right – and I also agree with (him?) that it’s one of the reasons (no pun) I’ve always dug it so much – I don’t need 100 differnet delay plug ins, let me really get down with one and learn it really well – same with all the sounds/effects

to each his own though – I know it drives a lot of people crazy

  8. HERE’S MY TAKE ‘ I WAS STARTING TO GET A LITTLE BORED WITH REASON. I STARTED MESSIN AROUND WITH THAT NEW BEAT THANG VIRTUAL AND I WAS ALSO PULLIN THE HARDWEAR OUT AGAIN . SO THIS COMES AT THE RIGHT TIME FOR ME. IF THEY GIVE ME 5 MORE INSTRUMENTS LIKE THOR I WILL BE GRINNING AGAIN lol WHAT MORE CAN YOU DO WHEN YOU HAVE JUST ABOUT EVERY REFILL THEY MADE ?
REASON STILL SOUNDS BETTER THAT FRUITY LOOPS BUT IF YOU WANT WARMTH THEN I GUESS YOU GOTTA GO BACK TO 12 BIT . I GUESS ITS TIME TO BREAK OUT THE ASR X PRO

  9. Whats crazy is you can get the same sounds from a refill that you can get from a VST. Sometimes better than a VST… no need to install anything either. If you have a better understanding on how to use the instruments and not just rely on refills themselves then you can tweak and manipulate something totally different from a refill.

  10. @ GEMINI ‘ THIS IS TRUE , NOT TO MENTION YOU CAN LOAD YOUR OWN SOUNDS . THE COMBINATOR IS THE REAL KEY TO IT ALL IN REASON . THAT AND THE NNXT.

  11. The first two feature vids they release didn’t impress me at all but today’s “Neptune” for Record 1.5 is pretty freaking dope I must say!!

  12. Live Sampling = Unlimited Creativity – This Version of Reason+Record is certified dope – can’t wait for the beta to try things out.

    • If they would have had this feature 3 months ago I would have spent my 300 bucks to upgrade all my stuff to Record w/Reason…instead, they were about 8 years behind and too stuck on “Recycle” so I ended up paying NI 500 bucks for my Maschine.

  13. @ juiceboxjackson GOOD POINT ! THEY HAD ALL THESE FEATURES IN THE WORKS PROBALLY BEFORE REASON 4 CAME OUT BUT UNFORTUNATELY FOR US AND FORTUNATELY FOR THEM . TIMING IS EVERYTHING. BUT LIKE I SAID EALIER IM TAKIN IT BACK TO HARDWEAR FOR A MINUTE CAUSE TO KNOW WHAT THE SOFTWARE IS DOING TODAY YOU HAFTO KNOW WHAT THE HARDWEAR DID YESTURDAY TO FULLY UNDERSTAND MUSIC . ALL THIS SHIT IS AN IMMULATION OF HARDWEAR. BEAT THANG VIRTUAL IS NOTHING MORE THAN AN ASR X ‘ SEE WHAT IM SAYIN ? BESIDES IM TIRED OF MAKIN BEATS THAT JUST SOUND WACK lol

  14. Reason is just a ReWire version of an advanced VST plugin.
That’s all it’s good for. Another sampler.
The sequencer section is almost impossible to work with, it’s too small…
Switching between the rack view and the sequencer view all the time, messing around with the fiddly buttons Etc. Get reason. Ableton with Reason as ReWire plugin.
Now your talking. Reason on it’s own = Toy.

    • Reason a “toy”? Sorry but you’re foolish.

You know I could bitch about Ableton as well. About how it’s way complicated. So complicated that there are people earning a living teaching others how to use it. haha I got Ableton and it took me a few hours to figure out how to make something. On the other hand, I got Reason and was making beats within minutes just with very basic knowledge of hardware that I applied to it.

If I put a blank Cool Edit window in front of you and ask you to make a beat you’ll probably think it’s impossible. But if that same same window is given to cats like Ricci Rucker, 14KT, or Apollo Brown, they’ll be able to flex on it like nothing.

Once again, it’s not the application is the person behind it.

      • what u guys really need to try(if your system can handle it)would be to try opening cubase as a host(or protools)and rwire reason and ableton into cubase at the same time. this might seem unnecesary as they all now have sequencing and editing tools but after using all 3 i have realized that they each have thier own special capabilities. cubas engine with all the sonic destruction of ableton together with the sick synths that only reason has provides endless ways to fuck it up.

  15. @MoRbIdBoY & tony traxx

Reason is and always was a beast in its own right. As long as you had a consistent flow of ideas surrounding your work ethic, there was no stopping you from tweaking, composing and arranging your music to a tolerable taste; even with version 3.0.1. What the Propellerhead camp did was expand the already massive capabilities of Reason, again(tenfold). Indeed Abelton is dope, I ain’t knockin’ it(I’m actually considering to start using it). Right now though, looking at the major updates of ‘5 and 1.5, it’s official. I’m going to be a Propellerhead until the day I die.

  16. I JUST WATCHED ALL THE DEMO’S FOR THE NEW RECORD AND REASON 5 ON PROPELLERHEADS WEBSITE . I ADMIT I AM VERY IMPRESSED . I DIDN’T BUY RECORD BUT NOW I SEE THAT THIS NEW VERSON HAD NEW DRUM POSSIBILITIES . A PITCH CORRECTION PIECE THAT SOUNDS STELLAR ‘ AND A FEW OTHER THING I SAW INTERESTING. THE BLOCKS FEATURE FOR COMPOSING I THINK WILL COMPLICATE PEOPLE MORE THAN HELP THEM. ON ANOTHER NOTE THIRD PARTY PLUGINS STILL CAN’T BE USED IN RECORD BUT I SEE THEY WENT IN FOR THE KILL ON THIS ONE. SOON I DON’T THINK PEOPLE ARE GONNA CARE ! NOW YOU REALLY CAN JUST BUY 3 THINGS … RECORD 5 ‘ A MICROPHONE ‘ AND A MIDI CONTROLLER AND YOUR DONE. ON A AIRPLANE ‘ TRAIN ‘ OR CRUISE . REASON IS TAKING OVER THE GAME ! THEY SMACKED FRUITY LOOPS USERS ACROSS THE FACE WITH THIS ONE ! GO TO REASONS WEBSITE NOW AND SEE THIS WEAPON OF MASS CREATIVITY THEY ARE ABOUT TO UNLEASH ON THE MUSIC WORLD !

  17. If you are using only one DAW to do all of your music production you are simply missing out. I say this because nowadays with the processing power in your everyday $500 PC you have incredible power to drive your apps. Me personally I compose in Reason, Rewire into Ableton when I want to use a Plugin or two, and lately I’ve been looking at Sony Acid pro 7 as my Rewire Host, because of my video editing background with Vegas. But saying all that there are some sounds, and general feel I can only get in Reason.

  18. @Ak-Nolij DEATH OF AUTO TUNE CAME OUT THIS FALL RIGHT ? IT WONT BE LONG BEFORE DEATH OF FRUITY LOOPS . I DON’T CARE WHY ANYONE SAYS I HAVE IT ‘ I DONT USE IT AND I THINK ITS DUMB. ITS SO CHEAP IT EATS UP YOUR CPU ‘ REASON DON’T DO THAT AND PC’S ARE ALREADY ARE UNSTABLE . AFTER D.O.FL. THEN EVERYONE CAN FINALLY GO AHEAD AND CONVERT TO MAC !

    • What on earth are you babbling about Tony?

On the same note one could say we all must now use busses for transportation, because I don’t know how to drive!!

      Oh dear…

  19. REASON GETS 30 COMMENTS FRUITY LOOPS GETS ONLY ONE
    ILMAO !!!!!
AND THE ONE COMMENT WAS ME HA HA
    THAT SAYS IT ALL

    • Honestly, I’d still be rockin FL Studio if I hadn’t switched to a Mac. Actually, if Image-Line ever pulled their head out, I’d probably switch right back. FL Studio didn’t necessarily have the “synth” sounds that Reason has (which is why I always just used re-wire) but as far as sample-based beats go, FL Studio was, and is, far more intuitive, easier and more inspiring than Reason is.

It’s only until these new features in Reason 5 do I feel like they might be catching up as far as sample-based beat making goes but even then Reason 5 won’t have Edison or the FL Slicer or SliceX. Those three features alone are worth the 150 bucks for lifetime upgrades to FL Studio.

The reason why I love Maschine right now is because of the way it emulates a similar workflow for sample-based beats which I enjoyed while using FL Studio. If FL Studio was available on a mac, I never woulda dropped the 500 bucks though…I would have just stuck with my MPD 24…

  20. i love the addition of kong but it makes reddrum useless. and i could care less about using other plug-ins i like reasons plug-ins and thats what makes it light on your cpu. ALL I WANT THEM TO DO IS ADD MIDI TRACKS!!! TO RECORD PLEASE SO PEOPLE WITH EXTERNAL KEYBOARDS OR MODULES CAN SEQUENCE IN RECORD

  21. I JUST THINK THEY NEED TO GET RID OF REDDRUM NOW SINCE THE ADDITION OF KONG ADD MIDI TRACKS TO RECORD AND INTEGRATE RECYCLE WITH THE NEW SAMPLING CAPABILITIES

    • i think they are keeping it on as a toned down version of the new korg. same with the rex. its now a smaller version of the OCTOrex.

  22. Dude. there is no Rex in reason 5, there’s just an octorex, and redrum is a pretty easy to use device it’s totally necessary. Kong is better for drums though, i agree. way more control in one central unit. and you get the sweet pads.
