33 Second Song Uses 70,200 Samples!

On September 12, 2008 German musician Johannes Kreidler will perform a 33 second long musical composition containing samples of 70,200 other creative works.  This is obviously a  political rather than artistic statement, but he makes some very good points that require serious consideration.  In preparation for the performance, here he attempts to register his song with GEMA, the German authors’ society for works of music.

Given that the Internet has made music instantaneously available on a massive, global scale and that the progress of new, never-before-heard musical material in avant garde music has reached its end, the “Product Placements” performance aims to highlight the fact that certain questions arise perforce in connection with sounds: Who has ownership?
