Kev Brown tells the tale of getting his start by handing out beat tapes at a local beat battle.  Though he lost the battle, contacts made from the demo tapes eventually led to working with Grap Luva, Marley Marl, and Jazzy Jeff.

Where’d you get that crisp version of What Ruling Means @ 3:33? Al of the other versions I’ve heard are from the 4-track version. The one here sounds a lot cleaner.
