Joe Zawinul Appreciation & Profile

September 8, 2009

Experienced crate diggers need not be reminded of Joe Zawinul’s keyboard mastery.  Those not familiar with his work should take a moment to watch the circa 1985 profile and learn about the legendary Weather Report keyboardist.

This video was just amazing i just learned some great history. This man can really smoke that piano and jam all by himself that is crazy i have never really seen that before. Thats the real deal. I hope my talents get as advanced as his own.

He was a legend (R.I.P., passed away sadly in 2007). Equal to Herbie and Chick Corea in my opinion! First of all, he was an INCREDIBLE (acoustic) jazz pianist, then he played with Miles in his “electric” period bands ca 1969…then he went on to create Weather Report with Wayne Shorter. Totally revolutionized the way electric keyboards are played, along with Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, plus composed some everlasting songs in the process like “Birdland”.

Check out these LPs with his playing and compositions: Cannonball Adderley – “Country Preacher”; Miles Davis: “Bitches Brew” (1969); Weather Report: “Black Market” (1976).
