Havoc - “I’m The Boss” Sample Breakdown

In case you didn’t recognize the sample, it was already made famous by A Tribe Called Quest for “Luck of Lucien.” That’s ok though, it’s alright if the Tribe sample wasn’t familiar… it’s also fine, and not altogether unusual, that a classic Tribe beat was redone for fresh ears. What really threw me off was that Billy Brooks “Forty Days” was already previously lifted by Havoc and Prodigy for Mobb Deep’s “We Don’t Love Them Hoes”; however, this time around the sample was downplayed, bass thickened a bit, and cinematically enhanced by dressing the track with stylized keyboard synths. Check out the three different versions and see if you can pick it apart.
