Wink Good Question

I've been doing Software For a short time now and to me im just not getting the feel of it. I've Used & have Reasons/FruityLoops/Ableton with my mpd24 but it just don't feel it. I plan on picking up a mpc 2000xl or 1000 sometime in the near future. Maybe then I will Mix the two methods (hardware & software). So Chose your Weapon of choice wisely.

I use software simply because its cheaper. true, it may seem that it is harder to form that intimate bond with software that you would have with an old piece of gear, and it may seem that virtuosity with a softsynth isnt as well-earned as the mastery of a real keyboard, but i say it doesn't really matter. if you make good with it, you will stick with it, and that's it. the most important thing with either choice is that you don't expect it to sound good by itself, you have to put a lot of work into it or there will be no difference between a $5000 setup and a $500 one.

I do prefer hardware I do but, it all matters what your comfortable with and how much money you really have to spend. I would strongly suggest an MPC and then software as the slave or supplemental role in beatmaking.

for me every peace of gear (software or hardware) has its own task. u just gotta find the tools u're comfortable with. for example, i do my main drum sequences with the mpc. i also use it for sequencing my hardware samplers and sound modules. then for my samples i use my s3000. i chop, loop and shape my vinyl samples with it. this is how i make the basic sketch of the track. i'm more creative with hardware than software. plus u can't forget the hands on factor. then i track everything out to my computer. this is where software comes into play. when i have all of my tracks (from hardware samplers and sound modules) layin in cubase, i then sequence with cubase. i might add some effects or some additional soft synths, arrange the track and mix it. i always start with hardware and always end up with software. thats the best way for me.

when people like dre and timbo are using software the answer is pretty much obvious... hardware is too limited... in that to get what maybe 50 gigs worth of VSTs/Refills will bring you'd probably have to spend probably close to $??,000 or so on synths and racks...
