I think this thread is about understanding how someone else got a particular sound, not about trying to copy it.

Honestly....

It really doesnt sound like a kick at all.

It sounds more like a Marching Bass.... thats why it sounds so huge in my opinion.

A marching bass and a Kick sound fairly similar, the main difference being that a marching bass can be played in more ways than a Kick drum and is usually already layered du to there being several members of the band playing this instrument at any given time.

Though it does sound like it is layered with a kick for impact purposes. But for the most part I would say try using two kicks at least. Use the first one with a great concert/sounding reverb. And minimize the low end... use your second kick for the punchy sound.

As far as the thump, that is mostly on the downbeat.... which sounds as if there is an extra 808 underneath it all.

The key thing would be the basis of all great mixing.... the less low end.... the more of the low end you can hear. So when that 808 drops on the downbeat it sounds even nastier. Notice the bassline isnt that deep either. Great craftsmanship on this song. Though I still like the grimy original with John Legend and the Frankie Lyman sample better

Just my thoughts though....

Keep the beats poppin, the rest will come....
Stay up fam!
