Get some kind of midi controller for sure. It really doesn't matter too much what it is you can get a keyboard type or an mpcish drum pad type and you can pretty much chop drum and play and both bot obviously one is better for playing and the other for chopping and drumming. But definitely get a midi device so you're not just programming your drums/basslines/chops. Software Fruitloops works I can't vouch for it but it's their you can also try out ableton which is another good software for beats which is what I use. From their go watch beatmaking videos on youtube and figure out how those people do it and try and copy until you learn the basics.

I don't know what software you can get for free but you can always bootleg...

I heard about this website you should never go to, it's called w w w dot magesy dot calm I think. Don't go to that website. And then don't download the Ableton Live 7 crack and do all the tutorials and learn it really well, and visit the ableton users forum and read everything and then begin to implement your ideas. Shit's illegal, son.

as for what you should do, you should follow archdukezeb's advice. In my opinion, you ultimately want to be using more of your body than just your fingertips and wrists to make music. Get some kinda controller and some way for it to communicate with your computer. Or else go hardware, like an mpc or whatever, but I'm guessing you are maybe proficient with using a computer, so it's probably easier to start on a computer for you. just my $.02

What do you have? Do you have a computer? What kind? Any experience with anything related to sample based music production?

I do have a computer.
I learn a lot from my cousin.

He uses Reason and a Keyboard with a pad attached.

I just got a Macbook for college...& I want to use the Mac for my "musical endeavors".

I'd like to use a keyboard like you guys have told me to...However, How large is the price?
haha

I used to use AcidPro...not really a lot of experience with beats though.

Dunno bout acid pro but one feature I'd say you need for sure is the ability to use Vsts. Theirs tons of free ones out their and even better ones if you bootleg.

My set up is Ableton Live and I use Native Instruments Battery to do my drums and my samples. Just chop em up in ableton send em to battery and I can just lay them out across my pads/keys. You can probably find a midi keyboard for cheap on ebay. Look at akai/roland/m-audio/korg/behringer/etc. and you'll find something for under a 100 probably.

P.S. If I were you I'd wouldn't listen to Raff and just do the opposite of what he told you to do, either that or you could torrent

P.S.S. I almost forgot whatever you choose read all the tutorials. It's boring as hell sometimes but it will make you so many leagues better than if you decide to just wing it.

Hm^^

Sounds good to me.
So your advice is to Download Ableton and Native INstruments Battery
...Buy a Midi Keyboard off E-bay for cheap
& read the tutorial?

lol

What do you guys think about Reason 4.1?

Which ever way I go...I should get a controller?(aka Keyboard?).
..A controller is a keyboard right?
lol

Thanks

^^^ I like Reason personally but you should rewire it into a program that allows you to use vst plugins so you got good options and aren't stuck with just one thing.

you have a mac?!? get started on garageband!!

its seriously amazing for creating sample based beats! get started on that and get really good with it before you move on. I can't recomend garageband enough... been using it for almost a year with my beats and I don't plan on giving it up anytime soon, although for the past 3 months I've also been using Reason rewired into it which I would recomend, but you don't NEED Reason. You can do alot of great stuff just in GB.
