I don't know how to use side chain in logic but it would be handy to know how. I think the most impotant thing is to start off with a bass that sounds dope without even touching it.
I usually EQ my bass and my kick to different frequencies, I usually bring the subs up on the bass (so the lower frequencies), and bring the subs down on the kick but make it hit quite hard just above the frequencies of the sub, so the kick stays bassy but without overlapping and creating that muddy effect.
I've also noticed that when u sample a ur bass from one that already exists it sounds better, simply because a sound engineer has probably already mastered it perfectly. Just chop up one note and play the others...
