I think religion gets such a bad rap, because of things that people have done. Don't get the religion confused with the people. Same with science, which I personally think is a system of belief just like religion. Scientists have come up with some crazy shit, like atomic weapons that have killed lots of people, but also medicines that have saved lots of people's lives. Religion has resulted in crusades and genocides, but also love and kindness and humility. If Christ was a real person who actually lived, and not just a story, then DAMN what a cool guy. I'd probably follow him around and try to emulate him.
I think the problems we associate with religion (and science) actually stem from the people and not the institutions. People are flawed, and right on if people are trying to be as good as they can. If people follow a system in order to improve themselves, that's fine with me.
And also I think agnosticism is a perfectly defensible position. It's just honest, like someone said above. I have a black box, it's locked, do you believe there's a kitten inside? I mean, you probably want to believe that, because kittens are so cute. Maybe you want to believe that so much that you can hear the kitten meowing, even though I can't hear that.... Who's right? Hard to tell.

I agree with you Raff.
Human beings as individuals can be absolutely beautiful creatures....but as a whole we are a very greedy, perverted, proud, despicable race.
War, poverty, lies....creatures of this nature are not capable of processing things of a devine nature.
I consider myself humble and compassionate for our global society. Religion has been in and out of my life for years. Its hard to look past the goons and hipocrites involved with organized religion to actually find hope in spirituality.
Though I would say I do believe in a creator, things seem way to exciting to just happen by chance or a product of the chaos theory.
PS:
Im going to see the Dalai Lama tomorrow in Seattle. Dave Mathews is putting on a show for compassion at which the Dalai lama will be speaking.
Not a big "Dave" fan...but I'll take it!!

If you think god exitsts becuase some old book says so, than I've got some oceanfront property in Iowa I'd like to sell you. And if you are sure there is no god then you are just as much an idiot. It really is that simple; If you claim to KNOW when there is no way to KNOW, you're just not that smart.
|
It has nothing to do with how smart you are. I'm not going to challenge you to a game of intellect because frankly I don't care. However, what you're missing my dear friend is a quality known as "faith."
Don't get me wrong on this point here because I'm not trying to "one-up" your life experience, but once you've gone through enough hardship you gain a little "faith."
In closing, try this little experiment. Challenge yourself to identify the order of the universe. How did we (as in all matter in the universe) get here? Where did the matter and energy originate from? OK, maybe you subscribe to the school of thought that we are one of several universes or that our universe is one version of many past regenerated universes. But in the end, it all came from something. It may not be an old man with a white beard, but with "faith" you come to the conclusion that there is some higher-power.

I think to understand the god I believe in is to understand why we are here.... no one knows how we got here, but my belief gives me an answer and also lets me know why...
Everything has a beginning and when u REALLY think about it... we either came from science or we came from a creator... science says we came from nothing( big bang theory- something from nothing) and my religion says we came from a creator who always was( science argues where he came from)- my argument to the scientific community would be this- How can anything come from NOTHING? lol it's mind boggling when u think about it...1. Science- molecules or dark matter formed u and I through evolution- WHERE DID THE MOLECULES and dark matter come from COME FROM? 2. Religion (from an outsiders perspective)- a creator formed u and I- Where did the creator come from...
Those are the two most logical(illogical to many) ways to explain how we got here, and in either case u have to conede that something came from nothing, and a step further in religion that a creator always was

yea science is funny like that...there a scientific law which states matter can neither be created nor destroyed but then turns around to saw the universe appeared out of thin air

Yeh I do believe in God and I do agree with SoulSyde that you start experiencin' Faith by goin' through trials and tribulations. I guess that when you go through things in life you start asking yourself questions such as what's my purpose in life or is there really something greater out there.
I do go to church too, and I still don't consider myself a Religious Person, but spiritual instead, it's more of a personal choice. Some people might believe in God and at the same time be hypocrites, others might not believe in God and still be great people. As long as you stay positive, it's all good.

i dont believe anything it goes against my princibles. to believe something means you have to have a lack of knowledge and that to me sounds like ignorance and i be damned if im ignorant. stop believing because you cant find the truth that way.besides why would i believe in a god that done went and killed people for his own selfesh reasons. from what i read in the bible thats one insane dude. lucifer looks like a more promising ruler being that he tried to help humans make their own decisions. you go agianst god and youll pay thats what i hear. when did lucifer turn people into pillars of salt or whatever. lucifer sure didnt flood the world. im not with bieng gods wicked little stepchild.

If someones agnostic, that doesn't mean that they don't know what to believe. A Christian says that we can know there is a God; an atheist, that we can know there is not. An Agnostic suspends judgment, saying that there are not sufficient grounds either for affirmation or for denial.
This made me laugh, from volumatic -

Raff's analogy of a kitten in a box (probably a dead kitten now unless this box has airholes) sums it up best i think. My outlook is this -
let's all believe what we wanna believe and not judge anyone for their views.
