my typical response would be the usual:

Pete rock

primo

shadow

large pro

dr dre

muggs

diamond d

jay dee etc..........

MOre and more though im becoming an even bigger fan of the cats from the 70's and 80's who made most of the records we sample from.
I mean if i could play 8 instruments like prince or quincy jones, I would thank god everyday for that gift.
But right now im in my little 80's phase, im really feeling some these 80's producers who worked with the than new keyboard technology and managed to forge some of the greatest songs ever from any era.

peace

Madlib, he's so creative and does so many different things like his jazz project Yesterday's New Quintet and Quasimoto.
Other producers i really like and look up to are ofcourse Dilla and Pete Rock.

Everyone covered who I like so I'll list some names that weren't mentioned:

Prefuse 73- No one talks about this guy but he takes beats to another level. I love that lo-fi buzzy sound. He's probably the most adventurous beatmaker out there.

newer cats: Illmind, Oddisee, M-Phazes- Check out Kenn Starr's album Starr Status, every beat is on point!

Chief Excel from Blackalicious: Gift of Gab is one of the best lyricists of all time imo, and Excel's beats are able to keep up with his talent.

Cool Calm Pete: This guy is so slept on. His LP "Lost" is one of the best and most complete hip hop albums I've heard. He did most of the production and within the context of the album, it's no less than perfect.

Nicolay: What he did with Foreign Exchange showed that he's a match for even the great 9th Wonder. His beats are complex but really smooth and maintains a cool groove. He makes the best feel good beats imo.

People Under the Stairs: Analog baby! Bring that fat sound back!

In no particular order

Madlib
Kanye
Damu Da Fudgemunk
Mike Shinoda
S1 (Symbolic One)
Just Blaze
J Dilla
20 Syl
Evil Ed (english dude, WELL worth checking out, his album 'The Enthusiast' is over on my blog)
Ill Son (another english dude)

I've never really been a fan of Dre, Scott Storch or Timbo. I'm more impressed by what dudes can do with super rare samples and how they cut them up and fuck around with them. I know Dre, Storch and Tim sample but not in the same way. Their style is a too clean cut for me, i like the gritty Mad Lib stuff, making beats in a hotel room with minimal equipment - that's dope.
