Default PsychTape Mixed By DJ Ian Head

Really enjoyed listening to that.

Whats the story with the online mixed tape?

Is a mixtape just a "mix" of tracks hand picked by the "mixer" (In this case DJ Ian Head). Or...Are there more ingredients needed for a mix to be considered a mixtape?

I hunt down mixes to try and help me understand the concept better. I found DJ One Trick Pony (MySpace.com - DJ One Trick Pony - Bristol, UK - Hip Hop / Rap / Down-tempo - www.myspace.com/breakface) and REALLY enjoyed listening to his mix of rarities, classics, breaks, and weirdness. I actually found this site: Laid Back Radio

This site hosted one of DJ One Trick Ponys' mixes. As well as other pretty impressive mixes of rarities.

I think this is something I want to do. Release some mix tapes, showing off my record collection. Semantik mentioned Authenticity on a previous front page blog. I want to make sure I can stick with that perspective. Mixing some stuff that I LIKE/LOVE. Hoping the listeners feel what I feel.

So...Whats the story with the MIX TAPE?

I have an association in my mind, where when I think "mixtape", I think "annoying guy yelling over all the good parts and generally being obnoxious". That's certainly not always the case of course. But yeah, I too am curious about the diff between a 'mix' and a 'mixtape'.

The "mixtapes" I have been refrencing are all beats. Funky, Rock, Break tracks all thrown in for an hour mix. Some song aren't "mixed"...Some songs just kind of play one after the other.

Is it the tracks that make these mixes so appealing?? Because I know on the DJ One Track Pony mix I was really feeling some of his material.

I guess there is a difference between the MC Mixtape and the DJ Mixtape and of course there is the Producer Mixtape (This may or may not include MC's).

So its comes down to: What are you trying to accomplish with your mixtape?

Not sure.

Anyone else?

How could you NOT love Wikipedia??!?

The "Mixtape" entry really goes into detail about the nuts & bolts of the mixtape. Different kinds, where/how it began, etc...

Bumping this up to get some feedback on the subject.

I have some gems that I kinda dont wanna drop on my podcast, but would rather create a "mixtape"....if that is indeed what it would be.

Whats the story?

hahaha i like how raff said mixtapes are dudes yelling over beats before the rapper gets on it, cause back in the late 90's, dudes like dj clue and red alert, were doing that exact thing

Default mixtape

i just try to make online tapes like i used to make shit on regular cassettes. no yelling, but it's all two turntables and a mixer and vinyl. hard to blend all those psych breaks, so i know this one was kinda slapped together, but im glad you enjoyed it!

more tapes at: everydaybeats.net

i do that ish monthly.

No doubt about the blending. All those crazy tracks, shits impossible to put together perfect transitions.
That was kind of one of my questions on the mixtape. In your case it seems like it was more of a showcase of vinyl. Showing off what you've got and presenting it in a way that is appealing to hip hop heads.
Tracks were killer for sure bro. Really enjoyed the mix and have checked out some of your other ones as well.
I am going to put something together featuring some of my rare, obscure stuff. Mix it best I can and see what happens.
Thanks for the feedback bro.

Found another dude who has some nice mixes put together (DJ One Track Pony):
MySpace.com Blogs - DJ One Trick Pony MySpace Blog

He's got all the tracklistings and links there in his blog. Real nice shit.

floyd maybe you should just not think about it so hard, and just make a dope mix. And then send us the link. There's no need for complicated philosophies.

BTW it's One Trick Pony hey? I think your version is more clever though.

Sorry, I wanted to come back and give a reply that's not quite so snappy.

Sounds like you got some cool rare records that you wanna "showcase", i.e. show off. Right? Also, you don't just want to make another podcast, this is something a bit more special. Probably you'd practise your mix more and polish it up. Probably you wouldn't talk and introduce the songs and shit (although I'm not sure).

Remember it doesn't have to fit neatly into any pre-conceived categories. I find that generally the best stuff can't be pigeon-holed. I guess the hard part comes when people ask "So, what is it?" and you want to give them an answer in 25 words or less. Like for instance, I play in a reggae band and that's what I tell people when they ask, but really it's not quite accurate to say that. Rather, it's the truth, but it's not the whole truth. But when I try to give a more accurate answer, people's eyes tend to glaze over. So I guess it comes back around to knowing whether to call it a 'mix' or a 'mixtape'.

Maybe a 'mix' has no talking on it. That seems almost too simple, but could it be true?
