I can back lord69 up on this one.
If you are looking to produce some KRUNCHING kicks and SLAMMIN snares,
definately use some distortion. It really transforms the feel of the whole thing.
It's also a good idea to put some reverb on the snare [note: don't go overboard,
it's that subtle reverb that just caries your snare that extra fraction of a second
that gets the desired effect].
Sometimes I like layering a few snares if I'm looking for more hit. I have found
that layering a wooden type of snare helps, if gives a nice pop to the origional
snare without really dominating.
Hope this helps,
mo'FIRE

I agree.

Also, the secret to the grimey-ness of samplers like the SP1200 is it samples in 12-bit. not 16 or 24 like we're used to.

The best way is to switch it up every time. EQ slightly and compress hard on track.. add and amp simulation to another. Always try different things. You'll get into "You're Sound" but if you try new things you wont become a stale producer that always sounds like Scott Storch.. err.. always sounds the same
