Default How do YOU pick a sample......

What is your technique for getting a sample? Will you listen to a whole record all the way through, skip through it, or do you go for a particular artist, or just get the record with a crazy cover on it?

I search for an artist (Mainly Female Singers) with a good voice then search for all her songs and go through all of them. I don't hear the whole song unless im feeling it, but I do go through it slowly chopping any pieces of the beat that I think i can do something with. Hope That Helps.

Once I find an artist I go through their songs,if I dont like the first couple or so seconds I start to skip through it.If I do like it Ill listen to the whole song to see if its some little hidden parts I might like or something.

Covers are definitely inviting! I can't front, I'll go at a dope cover asap.
What i try do is grab about 10-15 albums and go through them. I'll jump around in each track, searching for THAT part. THAT part for me is something that makes me nod my head, put my hand over my mouth, frown my face etc.
The funny part is i can go through 20-30 records looking for THAT part. Maybe I'm too picky.

Maybe that should be a thread "What's THAT part for you?" I'm interested.

if i find something i really like, i keep in mind the names of the artists, the players and composers, so if i see their names again, i can automatically make that a priority record.
sometimes its just about hearing something that's in the right key, something that gives you that cool feeling like yes, this is a sound that could still be relevant today. this is a sound that i can make a song about.
sometimes i start with things other artists have sampled and look from there, but it usually doesn't bring anything but disappointment from not being the first one to find the sample. and there's no use in feeling like that.
