I read that u should use a bass and a kick that occupy slightly different frequencies (or eq them so that they do). So for example, ur kick might be mostly in the 60-80 range, and ur bass mostly from 80 to 120, or vice versa. Also if you boost ur kick for example in the 60-80 range, u should subtract the same amount from the bass in the 60-80 range so they dont clash.
That said I still have a lot of trouble with this as I think most people do. A lot of time goes out the window trying to get it right.
