Whuts goin’ on good peoples!!! Yo…I see ya’ll doin’ some amazing things wit this site with teaching youngins such as myself about this crate digging business! I’ll be honest…I kno nothing about old music…I jus wish someone could school me on some people to sample from…I need good strongs samples…not too old…but soulful samples that Jay Z or Jus Blaze would use…maybe even HeatMakers…

If ya’ll can help me out…possibly send a link…that would be the best thing ever!!!

what up? yall looking for sounds to download and sample? or are you looking for the samples that cats already used? if it’s stuff to sample, then i suggest getting your hands dirty…just go diggin’ whenever you can. try not to take shortcuts cuz you’re gonna miss a lot of good samples along the way. if your looking for stuff that people like just blaze used (maybe to study how he flipped it?), then you can ask for specific samples in different forums around the net. most of the cats in them things give up the goods. peace.

Me personally, I would use samples as instruments and not full melodies, ya know not just slappin it on there and putting a beat behind it.. so i look for people like James Brown, and Stevie, and MJ.

@Crumbz – that may actually be somewhat legit. It was originally a CD that was pressed up for distribution. After a while I just decided to share it with everyone. Either way.. not a huge deal.

American producer/dj’s sometimes make me feel bad… hehe, I’m a little Dj/Nobody from Medellin, Colombia and down here we don’t have the opportunity to get in serious diggin because the selections are very limited, so I just turn to “digital diggin” that consists of search for old cd’s that people have powdered in their libraries, just me and my old discman looking for samples, breaks and bass lines of old romantic albums or tropical records (pure Latin music), I don’t know what you Dj’s think of that, i mean you really have the chance to get dirty with old vinyls, but I do so (with old cd’s) because I love music and I love researching and “digital diggin” amaze me with the infinite possibilities of creating good tracks… thanks from the heart crate kings you guys are like my teachers!!

I hear u Blackjack, personally 4 me itz mo ’straight 2 the heart 2 D.I.T.C. of which most Dj’s can agree with me. Each record holds a memory (like when I went 2 get my Marvin Gaye record then I got rained on,everything was wet except my good old record…hahaha) that is why I joined the Crate Digging family, all the way from South Africa baby…wait I think I can see the twin towers from here lol…anyhow keep it real beat makers & stay true 2 ur style bcoz it is who we are

The Pyro Synaesthesya track on the Henry Mancini mixtape is corrupt. Any chance of getting a new file to replace. Downloaded and unzipped multiple times, problems with the same track. Thanks. I probably hadn’t heard the Mancini name since my parents took me to see his orchestra play as a kid.

I’m a dominican amateur DJ, i’ve been doing a couple a things with break loops and samples, i love the sampling thing ,is almost like a science, but i would like to go a little further and make more original stuff, i’m kind of new to this but i have good knowlege about music, i’ll listen to anything i can get my hands on (that i like) so i find a lot of samples, can somebody give me some advice on what equipment or software would be best to start, any drum machine i can get for a reasonable price, much respect from a music lover.

Thanks

@ Dj InFlames

Get a MPC500 on Ebay, maybe no new MPC500 but a MPC somebody used before and sells it in good condition for a small price – for beat making and sampling the MPC is the best. The Mpc500 is a sampler,
48 track sequencer, WAV recorder ( yes you can do make live recording in CD quality with it, recording any signal, voice you want .. TV .. radio .. Mic .. Keyboard and so on .. ), Midi controller, Drumpad and it is also portable which you can use it with batteries in the train or wherever you want … i got a MPC500 and it is great man.

Instead of a drummachine, get a sampler because with a sampler you never run out of sounds, you can feed it with new sounds whenever you want and with whatever you want. But you could also buy Fruity Loops Software and then i Midi Keyboard or a Midi Pad for Beats and Melodies ( or both ) – with this you have a complete studio for a low price on your computer. The mastering of your music you can do with free VST plugins.

What you buy depends on what you have on your bankaccount. If you have the money you could also buy a hardware synthesizer like the waldorf blofeld together with a MPC, for bass sounds, strings and so on, you can plug it into your MPC and the MPC sequencer will sends its signals to the blofeld that the synth will play the sounds you need to your beats … with a synthesizer you will never run out of sounds because you create sounds here which you can record also to your MPC – this is a fusion between endless sampling, sequencing, recording, live beats and the endless synthesis of wav forms of the blofeld synthesizer … this is a powerfull team together with unlimited sounds and beats.

By the way, for those of you who have no money:

there is a software called LMMS ( LMMS – Linux MultiMedia Studio ) which you can also download for windows. It is a free legal CLONE of Fruity Loops, it includes sampler, synthesizers, drummachine, sequencer, Midi Support, Effects and more. So if you dont have the money then get “Linux MultiMedia Studio” just type it into a searchengine and download it for free. With it you have a complete virtual studio for free.

And if you want a free GREAT synthesizer too then search for “zynaddsubfx” on a searchengine and download it – it is a powerful software synthesizer, one of the best on the net, believe it or net, sounds awesome. It also has Midi Support and it runs also in LMMS, yes, it is there included already.

BOUGHT SOME GREAT SAMPLE PACKS FROM CRATE KINGS,IF I CAN MAKE A SUGGESTION? I HAVE BOUGHT ROYALTY FREE PACKS OFF ANOTHER SITE THAT HAD STEMS OF DIF. SOUL SAMPLES PLAYED BY GREAT MUSICIANS TRYING TO MAKE AN EXTRA BUCK.
THIS IS A GREAT WAY FOR THE “COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT” LAWS AND CONSTANT REPEATITIVE SAMPLES EVERYONE USES TO BE DIVERTED.
ARTISTS WHO HAVE TALENT PLAYING THEIR INSTRUMENTS SHOULD MAKE A LIL MONEY MAKING SAMPLE PACKS FOR PRODUCERS.
LIKE SAX PLAYERS….BASS PLAYERS OR ANY OTHER ARTISTS.
I HAVE BOUGHT A SOUL PACK BEFORE..WITH ALL MELODYS AND RIFFS..
WHICH LEFT ME REMIXING AND MAKING TRACKS FOR A VERY LONG TIME..
THE MESH OF THESE SAMPLES AND OTHER RECIPE’S IN MY COLLECTION HAD MY CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING PRETTY MUCH EVERYTIME A PICKED OUT A DOPE RIFF TO SAMPLE..
THEY COME IN 2 BAR LOOPS OR 4-6 BAR LOOPS..
GREAT TO CUT UP REMIX..
OR JUST USE AS IS AND ADD TO YOUR SONG.
IM HUGE ON FINDING MY OWN DRUMS WHICH IS MY FAV. PART..
I LOVE CHOPPING OLD RECORDS AS WELL…BUT I DONT HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THESE ROYALTIES,WHO DOES?
ARTIST GET TO WORK MAKING YOUR OWN SAMPLE PACKS!
DIY (DO IT YOURSELF) IS THE WAY TO GO!
COME TUNE IN TO “TAKE THE RED PILL” HIP-HOP RADIO SHOW

PEACE!

Really good article. Those in Hip Hop should take note. Few too many people involved in the Hip Hop industry really take advice. Thanks for posting.
