  1. My all time favourite is “Nas is like” sample. The track is amazing and Prem is a genius for putting it together. And also for finding this record, cause like he said the record was a Lutheran LP with pink fish on the black label. Would you ever sample that or even keep that kind of record? I guess many of you would say “no”. Moreover, this sample has been a mystery for other producers since the Nas track came out. Although the name of this sample has been floating around the net for a minute, the mystery is still unrevealed, because some people say that it’s not John Rydgren. So that would be my favourite one.

  2. Lenny Williams song “Cause I Love You” , Man i dont know that sample just does something too me. GIRL U KNOW I LOVE YOU !!!!!! AAAAAAA. Kanye killed it there bringing twista to kinda mainstream and my introduction to MIRA BE ARI and the sample stays with me weeks infact years after hearing this track.

I dont know this response may be a bit weak but shit I love that LENNY WILLIAMS track

  3. dammn!! I need this shit so bad! you the man semantik…

Favorite all time sample would probably have to be “its a mans world” by james brown. Those strings are without a doubt some of the rawest, most emotion filled strings ive ever heard. where did this kindof music even go? And the illest flip of that has to be dillas. theres no doubt in my mind that dilla and james brown are rockin joints to this day up in heaven man…

been goin through alot of shit lately, and winning this would be so incredibly dope..

    thanks again semantik..

  4. My favorite sample/samples of all time would have to be the samples dr. dre used in “Let Me Ride. Dre sampled from 3 sources Parliament’s “Mothership connection”, Bill Withers “Kissin My Love, & James Brown “Funky Drummer”. The reason i love this song so much is because you dont really find this in todays song. Back in the day producers use to sample tons of songs, just for 1 song & combine everyting & layer it built a SONG. For example, Dre does this in let me ride. Dre has both Mothership Connection & Kissin My Love’s Break goin, then when the hook comes in added when the snare of Bill Withers break came in is a James Brown Funky Drummer Break add. And for each time that snare is hittin on Bill Withers Kissin My Love, Funky drummer Comes buuuuut it’s panned to the left, then when bill withers snare hits again, Funky Drummer comes in again but is panned to the right. The reason Dre added the funky drummer sample was to make it a song, for the song to build at the hook & have dynamic range. A lot of people can’t hear the funky drummer sample on the hook, but they just know somethings there that got their head nodding extra harder. Although what Dre might’ve done seemed simple, he made a classic & thats a song i can hear no matter what kind of mood Im in.

  5. This is tough, but most likely “Sing a Simple Song” by Sly and the Family Stone. This was the first break I ever found on my own, without the help of something like Ultimate Breaks and Beats. I pulled out all of my mom’s records one day looking for anything with James Brown on the cover and just started putting the needle on the darker grooves on the records. All of a sudden I hit the break on “Sing a Simple Song.” I was still in middle school. That was on my old pair of Gemini XL-BD10s with a Radio Shack microphone mixer in the middle 🙂

  6. Hands down the greatest sample of all time is Eddie Kendricks “Ive Got To Be”. The sample makes it a must to spit that pain rap to! The way the beat and the melody were constructed was so genius yet simple, it makes me thing why i wouldnt have thought to make this haha. Also the message and the knowledge Eddie Kendricks throws at you throughout the song makes you listen to what the man had to say and think about how the things that go on in the song, still go on in the world today! Its a deep song and about as soulful of a sample you can get! And that is why its the best original sample of all time!!!

  8. I think the best original sample of all time would be Pharoh Sanders’ “Thembi” in KMD’s “It Sounded Like A Rock” produced by Subroc. I think this song, sample and record are one of the most significant representations of hip-hop and the movement that KMD was. Their record Black Bastards was a social comment and an instant classic with great subject matter and samples. Musical masterpiece.

  9. In my track list, I would have to say as far as chops… Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s, “They Reminisce Over You” or “T.R.O.Y”is some of the most creative MPC work I have heard yet to this day. He sampled part of the intro as well as a horn lick about a min. or two into the song of Tom Scott’s, “Today”. I feel these samples just on this track truly defined Pete Rocks sound and it created a path for hundreds of other producers. He started a movement in hip hop with that song and it still burns down the house almost 20 years atfer its release in June of 91.

  10. this is a difficult question cuz there have been plenty of songs produced by sampling that were dope like the one’s previously mentioned. esp. “t.r.o.y.” and “nas is like”. and you got 45 kings flip of annie’s “it’s a hard knock life” that was dope. a couple song’s off common’s “finding forever” album – “misunderstood” and “the people”. it’s difficult to choose lol but i’ll go with, and probably one of my all time favorite songs, ghostface’s “DAYTONA 500” off the classic “IRONMAN” album.

  11. My favorite original sample of all time is “The Visit (She Was Here)” – by Cyrkle for the song Get A Hold by A Tribe Called Quest – produced by Jay Dee aka J Dilla. There are several reasons behind this being my favorite sample of all time. When i first listened to The Visit to hear the way Dilla chopped it, I was blown away. The phrases “just drifting back” and “suddenly” are in two completely different parts of the song. He flipped it to sound like “drifting back just suddenly.” This sample is genius and goes to show you that Dilla was so ahead of his time. I can listen to Get A Hold, be it 1996 or 2008, and it will always be timeless.

  12. The MARIANO OF THE MARRIOT of samples is The Impressions “Man Oh Man(I Want to go Back)” I “Go Crazy” for that all day all day. I mean this needs not real explanation, I can see my dope boys goin crazy right now. The drum roll the horns the loop. MAN OH MAN!!!

Im sorry this sample is fly and aint no hot chopping her either just loop it clap it and kill it

  13. Bob James – Nautilus….”I coulda made my double LP just by samplin different parts of Nautilus” – NaS

  14. zapp “more bounce to the ounce” Its one of the first records i cut my teeth on. The lp had like and eight minute version, off the chain, if you from the west coast you already know.Reason isn’t the most user friendly for me so i could use the prize,1

  15. Jay-Z “You Don’t Know” Bobby Bryd-“I’m Not to Blame”____This is definetely my fav. I posted one earlier but I must say Just Blaze did this one some serious justice. I started to keep my original posting up but excuse please……..PAUSE…….the is the one.

  16. Another classic is OC’s “Times Up” off of the Word..Life album. It was produced by Buckwild who is another fine example of a master crate digger with some dusty ass fingers. He sampled a track called “A Day In The Life” by a drummer named Les De Merle, and his band on an album called “Spectrum”. Buckwild’s composition was practically a two bar loop with EQ’s but on the other hand… If you spend the time finding rare and unique import records , and you come across some fire like that… you wouldn’t mess with it either.

  17. What was your favorite orginal sample of all time and why?

It Has To Be “Africa” by Toto When Ja Rule Used It For Murder Reigns. The Way The Melody Hit Me I Searched For a minute To Even Find The Name. I remember Hearing it on the bus upstate, and not knowing the name (bad feelling) but i found it africa by Toto. Ja rule Murder Reigns. I love That sample.

  18. Love Ballad By LTD Lupe Fiasco did the Song So Much Moreft yummy bingham.. Thats another One.

  19. Love Ballad By LTD Lupe Fiasco did the Song So Much Moreft yummy bingham.. Thats another One. i love the original love ballad towards the end if u listen in the back ground u can hear a sound its like a keyboard i dont cant figure out which one or what type ???

  20. i sorry i love sounds melody grooves drums is cool if they fit. one more ill say??? its so many. ill take a new one i saw on kanye west blog Kanyewestuniverity. the intro is craaazzyyy it is by 88keys i think it is a sample by andrew gold always for you.. its called true fellings the intro is tuff those are my 3. Thanks for hearing me out.

  21. Yo the original sample that was my favorite and still
is, is the song “Garden of Peace” by Lonnie Liston Smith sampled by Skibeats on the “Dead Presidents” track by Jay. You can’t help but feel it when you hear it. The melody is so ill man! Just imagine walking into a jazz spot and Lonnie Liston himself sitting at a big ass grand piano playing the song, it will instantly grab you, if you appreciate good music

  22. The one original “Sample” that makes me lose it every single time. Would have to be the dance hall classic used for Cam’ron’s “Dipset Anthem”. At the time I wasn’t a big fan of Cam’ron. He had couple of joints that was always cool to throw in a hip hop set.
But this one particular night I was at a independent film screening and some young girl was having a sweet sixteen party right next door. Me and my girl stepped the rest room and heard the a commotion going on in this party, we found ourselves not being able to make it back to the screening.
So we slipped into the party, acting as if we’re suppose to be there and the DJ keep rewinding “Dipset Anthem” like five times full blast. Man, when I tell you that song had me and my girl under its spell. We ended up being the focal point of the party, cause we got so amped off that sample. Which is why I say “Thank God, for sampling”. Because if you listen to the original dance hall record, the song’s intro causes such a reaction in most reggae parties. That, as soon as the lyrics start, it feels like a jet airliner crashing into a building. The excitement is over. The way that sample is chopped so precise, the body can’t help but bounce when you hear it. I’m no fan of Hot 97 in NY, but I heard the song reeked havoc at this years summer Jam show. 50,000 people bouncing in unison, “Nuff Said”
Show me a better sample story than that?

    One
    Hells Yeah!

  23. After thinking about this question for the past few days, I honestly cannot come up with just one favorite of all time. I can see that a few of the people that commented to this question cannot either because they have said a few different answers. Thats the same thing i would do because there isnt just one if your a fan of sampled music. All you can do is appreciate what these talented producers have done with it and pass it down to generation after generation. Its just crazy when you hear a certain sample and you get that feeling in your body, like a high that dosent involve drugs. The thing you have to really worry about though is the non sampled music from the past 20 years. Can any of it really be sampled?? It dosent give you that feeling of the 60s, 70’s, and 80’s. So what are my kids or grandkids going to have to sample?? They’re gonna have to dig ten times as hard as we do now because everything from that era will be used up. It really makes you wonder where music is heading now a days??

  24. The freshest sample is “Heather” by Billy Cobham”, a jazz song used for Souls of Mischief’s classic track “93 til infinity” produced by A-Plus.

The sample is ambient, yet tense with descending strings peppered by piano flourishes. For the song, A-Plus sped up the string rhythm, chopped a saxophone jab and added an echo effect. The result song is one of the chillest tracks of all time, and has that rare quality in music of putting me into a state of mind. Whenever I hear it, I think of a sunny, clear day and all the good times with my homies.

A few months ago, I had the chance to meet A-Plus along with Del tha Funkee Homosapien at a concert. I went to A-Plus before the show and told him how much I loved the album and how thankful I was that he was still making dope music. He was so humble and grateful and to this day is an inspiration for me when I sample to find the soul in old tracks and bring it out in hip-hop.

Here is the song if you haven’t hear it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=1mt3vZHDiM8&feature=related

  26. Now this is a really good one

Of the Mobbdeep Hell on Earth album track 5 Trife Life…Now if you listen to the track you can here in the backgroud a creeking sound it sounds like floor boards or something?? this had me going for years and i cracked it….yes i know i am abit slow but it is a boat and the creeking sound is the boats ores…very creapy…it not a sample which is in your face but i really enjoy tracks where you have to listen and listen over and over again those where the days. Me and my bother would be up all night trying to figure out litte sould and this addiction made me want to produce music…Thank god for hiphop man…it kept me off the street and bobbing my head like a mad man….Good luck to all of you..Marc L
