It hard to deny that 2008 was an incredible year for online producer related material.   In fact, the year was so good that it became immensely difficult to narrow down the best of the best… so we’re asking you!   What was the best producer, DJ, or beat making video posted on Crate Kings during 2008?

Submit a brief comment about your favorite Crate Kings video post and become eligible to win a copy of Check The Credits DVD ft. Ron Browz & Dame Grease plus a copy of the book Basic Effects and Processors by Paul White.

Deadline: Jan. 17, 2009 at 12am. Winner will be chosen either by video selection, comment, or even randomly depending on submissions (and our mood).

  1. i think vinrocks art of beat making video is the best one… the edits are clean. and it goes from digging thru records, to finding the sample, to chopping and then the final product is dope. its not just the same old video with the beatmaker explaining it. it gives you a more detailed look into all the steps in making a dope beat.

  2. I gotta go with Black Milk In Studio Recording Tronic Horns
to me Black Milk personifies hip-hop’s good quality and musical talent. It means more to me personally because I slept on him as a J Dilla clone. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

  3. i hate this exile radio video, cause this ish starts playin as soon as i visit cratekings. and that beat is ugly.

  4. Hmm would prolly be the video with 9th and Luda in the studio because they seemed like they were having lots of fun and it brings back the memories of my long studio sessions where we had nothing to do but pass time by clowning on each other lol

  5. as fearly new producer i would have to say Damu The Fudgemunk in Madison Park Footage was. that was strait up raw. just seeing hem make beats got me amped and ready to go out a shear my beats. an im not rely at that level were im playing my beats for any one.

  6. I think that Black Milk has the tightest beat making video on Crate Kings. For the simple fact that he keeps it real and true to real hip hop. Every since i saw him on youtube. He has made great advance of his craft. With the lp and touring and working with new artist. Plus getting his name out there. And keeping J Dilla style in peoples ears. Is a plus. And i know has made me step up my game with sampling and using real drum sounds for my beat making.

  7. My favorite video was d-dot when he was in the lounge with donnie and another bad boy producer talking about the late notorious BIG and the mad rapper ect. I like that he dropped a few jewels and kept it real. It was very informative.

  8. This one was tough. I’d have to say my 2 favs, equally were Alchemist Makes “Key To The City” Beat ft. Prodigy and Nina Sky, and Alchemist & Prodigy: The making of Hold You Down.

I am not a fan of Alc’s west coast stle, but every once in a while he will come off with these absolute JEWELS. No they just fit together, are harmonious, and just make you MOVE (whether you want to or not!)

In the first I like just watching a part of his process and that track was just killin’ it! But watching Prodigy work w/ him in the creative process was pricless. More so because they’re just kickin’ back in the crib, food and drink everywhere…just at home doing what came natural.

I couldn’t choose…the process from a producer’s stand point on the solo tip or the process from a producer’s sight as a collab-er…so I choose both!

  10. The best vid was def the Moka Only studio tour. That dude had SOOO much different shit in his lab it was unreal. “I got this one keyboard, It only has one sound…… Its GREAT!” Lmao. Dude is hilarious. I just like that dudes style and sense of humor, not to mention he makes bangers and is true to his music making methods and roots. He had like 3 ADATs in there for petes sake lol.

I liked a lot of other vids in 2008 as well, but this one was the realest imo. True Hip Hop from the underground… CHEA!!

  11. Su-Preme The Beat Maker DVD. Has to be one of the best kept secrets and most entertaining DvD you guys posted. I don’t even have an MPC and he makes me wanna learn how to produce the hardware way Not just on software.

  12. For me it would have to be the Red Bull Big Tune Producer profile for Rob Bates. From battling cancer to winning the Seattle competition, Bates seemed so innocent. Like the music was the only thing that mattered. No filler. You don’t get that aura from a lot of cats these days. It made me remember why I produce music. Because I love it.

  13. vinrocs art of beat making video is the best one! It goes to show you how important dj’s are in the production aspects of making GOOOOOD music!!!!!

  14. I am casting my vote for—>Miko Only. Organized confusion at it’s best. He knows everything that he has in the his studio, and doesn’t care if his gear is abused or not. He seems very grounded. Creative ooze from his pores…

  15. My favorite vid was the Just Blaze one where he showed the Logic “chop” process. It’s always great hen an established producer aint scared to give glimpses in the creative “pro”-cess
