9th Wonder Talks Sample Chopping & Soul Music

Maestro visits with 9th Wonder as he explains his philosophy behind making beats, feeling the music, and sample chopping.  9th also briefly touches on Fruity Loops vs the MPC 2500 and what he feels are the most important ideas involved in being a producer/music maker.

Everybody has different technical ways that they make a beat, but for me it’s the feeling.  If I don’t feel it, then it’s not right to me.

Everybody knows that I used to make beats on Fruity Loops, sometimes I still do.  It’s all the same premise, taking a sample and then turning it into something that’s yours.

  1. I liked 9th’s score to Maestro’s intro. And much props to 9W’s scholastic pursuits at the famous Duke University. Makes me want to take a trip to NC and enroll.

    BB$

  2. yeah me too! He should post exerbs from his class at some point so those who aren’t there can get some info as well.

  3. 9TH WONDER IS DOPE .PERIOD .I LOVE HOW HE BRINGS BACK THE SOUL OF THAT FEEL GOOD MUSIC. I WONDER WHY HE DOESNT USE FRUITY LOOPS AS MUCH THOUGH. THATS WHAT GOT HIM IN THE DOOR. I GUESS HE REALIZED THE POWER OF THE MPC ‘ I THINK ITS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE WAY THE MPC CHOPS SAMPLES .I MEAN REALLY ITS SECOND TO NONE. RECYCLE DOES A DECENT JOB FOR THE VISUAL ASPECT OF IT IM NOT SURE ABOUT FRUITY LOOPS HA HA BUT THE MPC CAN PUT IT DOWN ON 16 PADS WONDERFULLY AND AT DIFFERENT VELOCITY ‘PITCH ‘ECT. I COULD GO ON AND ON.

  4. IT NEVER WAS AND NEVER WILL BE ABOUT WHAT DAW OR EQUIPMENT YOU USE. GET OFF THE GEAR’S DICK AND MASTER WHA T YOU GOT. AND I COULD GO ON N’ ON 2….

  5. i read a rza quote that said the most important piece of equpment in the studio was your imagination or creativety one of those 2. Regardless trying to get the sound i want without pt and midi would be a nightmare and time consuming as shit but my favorite thing about music is if it sounds good it is good nothing else matters

  6. Its true.. dont matter what equipment u use if u have talent itll show regardless but man curiosity is a bitch sometimes.. what is that interface that he is using? is it hooked up to pro tools? or Logic? i’m just curious please someone lemme know!!

  7. Matic…he’s definitely running Pro Tools with a Digi 002 interface. It’s true though, you can make dope shit with anything as long as you have knowledge of what your equipment is capable of, and the two most important things, talent and creativity. If you lack the last two no amount of expensive equipment will help you.

Take any produce worth his salt, give him an old Casio keyboard, and see what happens. Though it may not have the tightest sounds, I guarantee that something hot will come out.

  8. @ nasty very true i seen a cat play the fuck out of a casio . matter of fact aint nothing wrong with casio ! most churches ‘ schools ‘ weddings and bands use casio. they gettin money ! just a different clientele. they have good prices ” you can get a casio at best buy . millions of people go to best buy feel me. the average joe will drop 100 dollars on a casio quick and give it to thier kid who’s just starting out rather than drop 2 grand on a motif !! real talk .

  9. Yea no doubt tony. There’s no reason to sink that kind of money into it getting started. I mean what would happen to most people who really have no experience using something like a Motif, or Fantom, or Triton, etc. if they just went and bought one starting off? More than likely they would be overwhelmed and frustrated trying to do even some of the most simple things. That could be a waste of 2G’s if you don’t know what your getting into. The biggest things that you need to have if you want to succeed are patience, creativity, ambition, and an open mind. If you have that you can make any piece of gear work for you in some capacity, no matter what it is.

  10. Man I don’t know when hip hop started thinking you need a trillion dollar studio. Them cats dj Kool Herc them ol skool cats picked up turn tables and records and made beets while the rest of the idustry had electric guitars and all that crap man I make beats use what I use and don’t care this is hip hop

  11. True true true.
Inspring stuff most people just knock knock knock on fruity!!
    Lol
I guess its usually those that went to school to lean their craft and don’t like that some1 can go and do fruity without any schooling and that way even eventually get to be near their level even in the studio based on the stuff they learned in the fruity!!

  12. It doesn’t matter what you use my dudes….pots, pans…throwin forks and knives into the kitchen sink…nail filers for ya shakers lol..fuck I dunno…

I personally use everything that makes a sound. Even my nephews toys hahaha…I use the fantom, the mpc, pro tools, fl studio, cubase, reason, logic, sony acid pro, adobe audition, and I jus started fuckin around wit Reaper last year….. They all do it. I’m personally fuckin wit live instruments now so that I can get into bein able to play an array of things for a band also….then these producer haters will have to shut the fuck up. I’ll be a cat who can do graf art, emcee, produce, dj, play classical arrangements right up to pleasin every wack emcee and disrespector of the hip hop culture’s mamaz all on a daily basis b4 noon! 🙂
