For anyone who is interested in the this stuff, the true roots of hip hop that is, check out the-breaks.com. Along with crate-kings these sites changed the way i think about music. THANK YOU!

This is a good list…But I failed to see some breaks that I thought would’ve been nice to see on the list.

Like Boz Scaggs- Lowdown.

And what about the infamous Amen Brother break??? I know it’s a bit obvious, but still…

Idk. Pretty good list, but still needs a little work.

I have a question…. where do people get cymbal and hi hat sounds from? I know you could find a sound in a drum loop from a song, but most of the time, they are timed on or flammed on the kick/snare beat.

Do they ever come up with rhythms that are unique? Oh well, typical hip hop/rap.

Reply

Jaime October June 10, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Yes, there is what you call “unique” rhythms, I’ll stick to drumming/instrumentation in Hip Hop(the theme of this post, right?), LOL: ’70’s and early ’80’s, before the rise of the sampler within Hip Hop, it was Live instrumentation, listen to Sugar Hill Gang to Kurtis Blow, Lady D, Paulette & Tanya Winley. Sampler makes its rise in 1980’s in Hip Hop. There still was original Live instrumentation in Hip Hop from the likes of Rick Rubin & Stetasonic(they also used samplers). To the 90’s with the Roots, The Coup, shit even DJ Quik and OutKast started to use live instrumentaion more often. Now in the 2000’s to ’10’s, there’s been an explosion of live instrumentalists in Hip Hop, understand that the kids from the 80’s & 90’s grew up listening to Hip Hop and their families had the means to buy them instruments, maybe even lessons, and are now playing Hip Hop on their woodwinds, acoustics, percussion instruments etc., see Miri ben-Ari, Blakrok, Robert Glasper, Madlib learned to play instruments as well, I can go on… So before you make a comment out the side of your mouth about Hip Hop on the internet, 1) know that one day a Real Hiphoppa will check you on your comment, and 2) (which should of been number one to me) do your research.
To the rest of the Hiphoppas on this site, great job posting these breaks. I’ll drop a couple of Gems: YES, I do implore All who want to sample to do it by vinyl, the low end freq. is so much more prominent from the vinyl, its so sick, at times you can even hear the background noise of the artists grunting, encouraging each other, just really jamming & having a great time(these days everything is so “perfect” it takes the “human element” away from it. Buy to Support the artist you are sampling, take the time to get to know music itself. Its also Great to Know which artist and songs you’re sampling, I personally Dislike when one of these lil producers these days got NO clue who they’re sampling, most times they fuck up the beat, thus even fucking up the original song. Plus certain songs, just by its aesthetic nature alone, shouldn’t be touched.

Reply

Warwolt January 16, 2011 at 10:28 am

You people need to learn how to rip audio from your computers, even though I’d encourage people to go out and find this stuff on vinyl rather than just ripping them off the web.

Reply

Notua February 7, 2011 at 8:07 pm

Don’t bother purchasing / dowloading this.

got the CD a year ago, would have been way better if noise reduction wasn’t used on the samples, which rendered alot of the breaks unusable from a production standpoint- some of the breaks sounded so watery they could have passed for 128 kbps mp3s. damn.

As others have said, you should just use this list as a reference as to what vinyl you should buy.

Why don’t you people go out and create your own drum beats and breaks instead of copying what other people do? So damn original it’s mind boggling. Stop trying to regurgitate songs and make them your own it’s a mockery.

Reply

whooord May 10, 2011 at 7:03 am

MAN ARE YOU JUST CONTRADICTING YOURSELF OR WHAT? THIS IS WHAT YOU SAID AND I QUOTE “STOP TRYING TO REGURGITATE SONGS AND MAKE THEM YOUR OWN, ITS A MOCKERY“
YOU DONT KNOW AN OUNCE OF MUSIC DO YOU, THINK ABOUT IT, 90% OFF ALL YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS, I GUARANTEE THERE WAS SOME SORT OF “REGURGITATION” IN IT. I GUESS ITS FAIR TO SAY DJ PREMIER, PETE ROCK, J DILLA, RZA, DR DRE, LARGE PROFESSOR, SHOWBIZ AND THE REST OF EM ARE ALL A MOCKERY?

Reply

cheapnig March 16, 2011 at 9:01 pm

you can always sample straight off the player

Reply

cyber Sequencer Reviews March 18, 2011 at 9:09 pm

Yes you can do that but the quality is going to be much better sampling it yourself (processing and all that)

I wouldn’t sample it from the player because I like my sounds printed off a avalon or mindprint preamp before it hits my audio recorder

Reply

cyber Sequencer Reviews March 18, 2011 at 8:59 pm

The One -

It’s because people are lazy and others have the mentality of “work smarter not harder” why would someone want to

1. Go to the record story
2. Buy records
3. Listen to the records record drums
4. Batch process

This takes hours and hours to do

When they can just take the ones that someone else has already spent the hours finding…sampling…processing and packaging?

I’m a fan of both to be honest but people that making money in this game.. they don’t like doing that they rather have stuff already done for them (same with lazy people)

I’m not sure where you’ve been for the last 3-5 years and being original isn’t a highway of making a paycheck

koptasac April 14, 2011 at 5:07 am

Not everyone is out for the check. Those out for the check probably have access to the best drum sounds or drummers themselves. People already have it easy diggin online….kind of takes the experience away from actually going out to oddspots and finding that record you can sample from. anyways….

look at the greatest/dopest producers…they used to spend countless hours at record shops digging for sounds. It’s not always gotta be about the money…this is fucking art…a fucking experience…and way of life.

If you wanna be that guy who follows the checks than go grab you a 808 kit and some damn synths and a female vocalist and you’ll have a hit.

Reply

JB April 16, 2011 at 6:58 pm

You motherfuckers sound so corny…the “experience of diggin” LMAO fuckin geeks….stop trying to make shit mor complicated than it has to be for the sake of feeling like its fucking rocket science to make a beat sound dope.

Reply

whooord May 10, 2011 at 7:12 am

its you little internet bitches with an attitude like yourself thats fuckin it all up… you got no knowledge, your too ignorant and probly bump that pop infused rap crap. experience of diggin, fuck if your laughin at that phrase then you got no place in real music. you probly still on fl studio trail edition fuckin with pre drums and fuckin with synths n pianos

Reply

cyber sequencer May 3, 2011 at 11:32 pm

The greatest producers did that because they had no choice that was the only way. The greatest producers that once did that no longer do that because its time consuming for them (the ones that are still current) hell most of them don’t even dig they have other people diggin for them

I’ve been a check follower since day 1 shoot me (i hate working for people) so i make cash with affiliate businesses and Royalty checks (jingle placements) thank you MTV.

Now synths, singers and 808s don’t equal hits these days everything has gone back to Disco (sorta) you just have to play Chords and arps with a decent hook.

Following trends doesn’t mean doing pop rap like you hear on the radio there is a mass market for those of us who care RECREATE old school music
